Cordura material: conjectures and facts
Often on thematic forums and in social nets between opponents are tough debates about Cordura. It is not surprising that since from the beginning fighting in the east of our country, firms that produce bags, holsters, backpacks, body armor began to appear like mushrooms after rain. It is fun and sad at the same time (it’s very disappointing for our soldiers and volunteers, who often come upon fakes and just poor-quality products) to hear phrases like “our Cordura is better than … smb’s” , “we sew our products from REAL DuPont Cordura”, etc. We understand that such words are nothing more than a PR move and not very successful so we decided to present reliable information about this material in a convenient “question-answer” form. We hope that you will gain a lot of useful information from this material.
When and where was the Cordura material developed?
At the beginning of the last century, a group of Du Pont researchers accidentally invented nylon (polyamide). All over the world the characteristics of the new material were appreciated and everywhere they began to sew jackets, overalls, ski suits, army equipment, etc. But in no case should we identify the concepts of “nylon” and “Cordura”
because the special yarns used for the creation of Cordura, 4 times stronger than nylon.
DuPont is a chemical giant who didn’t have time to produce yarns and even Cordura fabrics. The main specialization of the company is the production of high quality raw materials. At the same time, it would be foolish to lose the benefit from the invention, therefore the development was patented, and the production license was transferred to the division of the American chemical concern Koch Industries - Invista. So when you hear about “DuPont” Cordura, either you are purposefully trying to be misled, or your opponent is ignorant of this issue.
Does Cordura contain natural fibers?
Technologists of Invista Company, after obtaining a license for the production of the material Cordura, developed a special type of weaving and with the possibility of adding up to 10% cotton. Thus, it was possible to improve the appearance of the material, to give its surface a light hairiness, which makes tactile sensations more pleasant.
In the production process, the fabric is processed in several stages, which makes the outer coating of high quality and durable. Special impregnations allow providing excellent water-repellent properties. Recently, for the impregnation of the material is actively used a special composition of the IRR, which makes products from Cordura indistinguishable in night vision devices.
Is Cordura suitable for military clothing for our latitudes?
Cordura fabric has a range of impregnations and coatings depending on the customer’s tactical and technical tasks. Equipment from the material Cordura has all the qualities that are relevant to the products of this type, and deservedly enjoys high popularity among the military. Cordura fabric with a density from 100 to 1000 Den is used for tailoring and equipment sewing.
Is it possible to buy secondhand Cordura fabric?
Cordura fabric is produced in only a few factories in the world. The cost of its manufacture is rather high
so it is never stored in warehouses. Cordura fabric is mainly made on a by-order basis. As a rule, material is imported into our country in batches of 2 kilometers of the same color.
When ordering such raw materials in the offices of an American company, the manufacturer needs to fill out a questionnaire in which the color, density, type of impregnation is indicated, up to the number of products that the customer plans to produce from the material obtained. American manufacturer attaches printed sewn labels "Cordura" to the order.
If you are offered to purchase a CORDURA® fabric at a very attractive price and with a small meter from the hands or in the online store, in 100% of cases you want to buy a fake. The material may be of high quality, but in most cases it has almost no resemblance to the original product.
What is the real “Cordura”?
Today on the market you can find products from similar materials, which, however, are significantly inferior in quality of the original CORDURA®. For example, some fabric manufacturing factories “trespasses” the manufacture of products from raw materials, which is not related to the original from the American manufacturer. So, we can often find products made from Codra material which is produced in Korea, and, despite the consonance of the names, it has nothing to do with the genuine Cordura.
Often for Cordura give all sorts of varieties of Oxford cloth. In China, for example, Oxford 900D PVC is produced by kilometers, which is a polypropylene film with a base. On the surface of such a “Chinese miracle” one can discern a stamping of Cordura. Impregnation in such a fabric is also nothing more than imitation. Naturally, there is no reason to talk about any practicality, durability and heat resistance of Chinese material.
